It's Start

Finally had a brilliant first sentence come to me last night for a twin story I want to do. This time I was even smart enough to jump up and go write it down. Yay!! Now if I can just build from there into about 50,000 words.

I had a cowgirl twin story I'd started a few years ago that I really loved but I just couldn't get the plot worked out to make what I wanted the characters to do make any sense. This time, I think I have a totally different approach to the plot but it still needs a little ironing out.

I think I even have my mind wrapped around some nice names. Regan, which means the King's child in Gaelic and maybe Rhian, which means nymph. Don't those two just sound like trouble? A spoiled little daddy's girl, used to getting everything she wants and a sassy little minx always getting them into trouble. Love the story ideas bouncing around in my mind right now.

Gets me thinking a little about whether I am a plot driven or a character driven sort of writer. Usually I do start with ideas about the characters and a vague idea of what I want them to do - and then I try to make the plot work into something that makes sense for that. It's a bumpy road though when my characters want to do things that just don't make sense to normal people.

So what style of writer are you guys? Is it all about the plot or the characters for you?

Yay! Your first line came from the ether! Mine totally didn't, but according to a writing buddy, it's catchy. So I'm not gonna freak about it yet.

I like the concept, I've read a couple twin-inspired romances, but I can only remember one right now! It was an Intrigue by Sylvie Kurtz called Alyssa Again, and being an Intrigue it was all about catching a killer. Of Alyssa. So, only one twin in the story, but it was very good! A very strong(and unusual) emotional element available to twins. And after I read that one, I was forever in love with the concept of -adult- multiples in romance. You see baby multiples all the time. Adult? Not so much. It's a nice twist.

I back-build my characters to make them make the decisions I want them to make. If I want to tell a story about X, I throw enough baggage backstory at the characters so that when it comes time to X, they want to make that decision and I don't have to force it. That's the theory at least. Sometimes they throw me curve balls.

Funny how those things just smack you out of the blue, huh? Loving the first two lines now... lol. Not much of a start, but hey, it's a start. If I can get a chapter of this done in time, it will definitely be my New Voices entry. I think... I might change my mind between now and then.

Originally this story was going to be an all grown up Parent Trap - but that's definitely changing now. Maybe that will be an idea for later still? ;-)
